Those of you who know me (or took the time to read the “About Me” section on this site), know that I have been in HR for a long time, and have done a ton of recruiting in that time. I’ve probably seen hundreds of thousands of resumes throughout my career, some eye-catching and noteworthy, some… not so much.
I’m the type of recruiter who, not always, but often, will email a candidate and let them know if there’s a glaring typo on their resume, if they addressed their cover letter to the wrong company, or that “email@example.com” is not an appropriate email address to use on professional documents, and advise them how to set up a free email account that’s more appropriate to use during their job search. A lot of recruiters or hiring managers are not so forgiving and willing to give a candidate a second chance (and honestly just don’t have the time), so these are all examples of ways to get your resume thrown into the “no” pile real quick. You all know the saying, “you only get one chance to make a first impression”. 99% of the time that is true, so don’t blow it!
I’ve been coaching people on writing resumes and cover letters, creating LinkedIn profiles and how to get the best use out of them, being aware of your digital footprint, interview prep, and a whole host of other things for quite a while now, and have decided to make it an official side gig.
My intent is to make this blog a place to provide career advice – both in terms of what you should and should not do in order to be successful in your next job search, based upon my experiences.
I’m also offering up my experience and expertise to anyone who would like assistance with their job search (see Services page for a list of assistance I can provide). My hope is to make this informative, interesting, and hopefully interactive, so please subscribe! If you have questions or would like to see a post on a specific topic, don’t hesitate to respond in the comments below, or you are always free to reach out to me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks for joining me on this journey!
